Now, I don’t usually do specific product recommendations and I promise you Lipton is not paying me for this lovely promotion but after being sick for the past couple days and going through boxes of different green teas, I really felt I had to give this one a shout out. I’m tea addict, I could go on and on about the different loose leave teas I keep in the house but I love that I picked up this Lipton’s Green Tea with acai, dragon fruit and melon in duane reade along with my other ‘get well’ supplies because that means you can too! This tea tastes so delicious that I feel like I’m drinking a gummy bear! It’s so light and fruity that it was easy to drink cup after cup of it.

So I just had to share it with all you amateur tea drinkers trying to get your four cups a day in, Lipton’s Green Tea with super fruits can be a great way to help ween yourself on to the green stuff! Drinking green tea everyday is so much healthier for you than coffee and with yummy green tea as accessible as your local duane reade or super market there are no excuses to not start incorporating it into your diet today!

Here’s my first ever “comment back” tip clip about how to be skinny and social! I get some many questions from lovely sweet and skinny-ers like yourself that I decided to make some response youtube videos to some of the most frequently asked questions. Living in a big city like NYC, temptation is everywhere and a lot of jobs require you to super social and attend tons of events so here’s how to keep up appearances and still not sabotage all that good work you put in eating healthy all day and sweating at the gym! Enjoy!

minttea

Nothing like a sick day or two to leave you overwhelmed with ‘To Dos’! It’s certainly not as fun as it used to be in middle school when sick days were synonymous with Mom waiting on you hand and foot, no school and endless TV watching. Being sick as a grown up is downright stressful and being stressed does not help the healing process! So let me get my apology out of the way, I’m sorry I’ve neglected to post the last few days but I’m back in action now and promise to be back on the horse for your healthy living needs. I did have some interesting sick day revelations that I wanted to share with you and perhaps during this crazy flu season you may have noticed the same and can relate. Feel free to post a comment or email me at gosweetandskinny@gmail with your sick stories!

First, I’d like to point out that when your sick your body only craves what it NEEDS. I’ve been avoiding sugar for the past few days and as soon as I got sick I lost all desire for it. I genuinely could not imagine eating a brownie! Hmmph, could this be because our body inherently knows that sugar is NOT good for us? With my body on high alert all I wanted to ingest was clear liquids – tea, seltzer, water and broth based soups – I could not get enough! Well I think it’s a great a way to realize you should be ingesting more fluids like tea and water on a daily basis, even when your healthy! Our bodies need it and when our system is down for the count it clearly sends important signals to our brains that steer us to more and more liquid medicine.

Secondly, have you ever noticed how after a couple days of laying in bed sick your skin actually looks amazing? I know I tend to get frustrated cause here my skin is looking all great and I still don’t feel quite up to going out and showing it off. Well, in addition to the obvious fact that you’ve been sleeping a lot more than usual and not wearing any make up, the high consumption of tea and water is to thank for this post-illness glow. Can you imagine if you actually consumed that on a regular basis instead of waiting to get sick?

I don’t know about you but my cravings for coffee, diet coke and any other milky or sugary concoction completely disappear when I’m not feeling well and I think that says a lot! Our bodies know what they want, so why don’t we start giving it to them?

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner and drugstores stocked with red and pink heart shaped goodies, you can’t help but get in the mood for love, or at least sweets! So of course I immediately thought of red velvet cupcakes! I experimented with a new low fat “brainless baking” red velvet cupcake recipe last weekend and it turned out so yummy I had to share!

This one is for all of you not so kitchen oriented mamas out there or just for the gal too busy to slave over the oven this week! Take a quick trip to the super market and grab these few items for some brainless and delicious low fat red velvet cupcakes!

LOW FAT RED VELVET CUPCAKES

Box of Red Velvet Cake Mix
1 fat free plain greek yogurt

Simply take the cake mix and add your Greek yogurt to it as well as a cup of water. Place in cupcake holders and bake as directed on the box! Yup, that’s it. Crazy easy!

I do caution that my cupcakes did sink in a little in the middle so I got crafty and put a dollup of my cream cheese icing in the center and noone even noticed! They were moist and delicious. If you need an easy low fat frosting you may want to try using some vanilla pudding mix and fat free cool whip or for a lighter cream cheese topping use low fat cream cheese and mix in confectioners sugar till you reach your desired consistency.

MM6                Mondays like today, I need this motivation as much as you probably do. Here in New York City it is dreary and gray with leftover snow piles cluttering the sidewalks in various shades of charcoal. Getting out of bed is not easy but somehow most of us have managed to do it.  This week’s motivation comes from a quote I’ve been reflecting a lot on lately. Well actually the exact quote I had been thinking of was “you get in life what you think you deserve”  but this is extremely similar I believe. You can have it all if your not afraid to ask for it!  Say that to yourself a couple times in a row and I think some things in your life may immediately start rearing their ugly heads at you. I’d even write it on a sticky note and put it by your desk or your mirror so that you can see it day after day. Are you asking for the things you want it your life?! I mean, really, really, literally asking.  We only have a short time on this planet and we shouldn’t waste a second of it not asking for what we want! Everything in our life is a reflection of what we are asking for right now, in relationships, in careers and in your BODY! Don’t accept anything less than you deserve! Now you can take this and run it through all those areas of your life but for the sake of brevity and because this website is about a healthy body, let’s focus on your health.

Are you demanding a healthy, fit and vibrant body? Or are you settling for less than you deserve? I hope this is not too “out there” for you guys but I truly believe if you can grasp this concept, you can transform your life. You can have the life, love and body of your dreams! If you put out into the universe (or google) the question “how can I eat for more energy” or ” how can I exercise to thin my thighs” etc, etc, you will get an answer! If your looking for ways to be more active, trust that they will appear, you’ll start noticing more active options for dates or maybe decide to start walking to your coworkers desk instead of sending them a short email. If you want a meeting with someone who you think is out of your reach (I use italics because they are just a person and this is all in your head) even the more reason to go ahead and ASK for it. This monday, I’m reflecting on what I want in my life and then seeing what kind of “asking” needs to be going on. I feel motivated and strong to take on this week and hope you do as well!

alarm clock
A couple weeks ago I read that a study in the UK reported that people who rise earlier, talking about 7am early, tend to be slimmer, happier and more conscientious than their later waking peers. Now for those of you who work a 9 to 5 and get your bum out of bed even earlier than 7 am, please try not to laugh at me for finding this revolutionary but I live a relatively alternative lifestyle and therefore kind of make my own waking hours. However, since reading this fact, as well as a couple other articles about women who really inspire me and seeing just how long their day is and how much they manage to fit in to their waking hours, I decided to start waking up earlier.

I’ve been making it a habit to wake up between 7 and 8am in the morning everyday and then giving myself till 9 or 9:30am on the weekends. I found that since my body has adjusted to waking up so early during the week, I don’t tend to want to sleep as late as I used to on the weekends and I absolutely love it. I am addicted to waking up earlier now! I don’t know if I’ve lost any weight cause I haven’t been paying particular attention to that but I definitely feel more accomplished in my day and get a lot more done which makes for a much happier me! I also have gotten in to some really amazing habits like going to the gym or doing some stretching yoga every morning and then having some tea, going over my goals for the year, month, week and seeing what I can tackle that day but also spend a few minutes feeling grateful for all the wonderful things I have going on in my life right now. It’s a world away from my usual grab some coffee and get myself ready to run out the door as fast as possible before my first appointment days of the past. Getting up earlier has definitely made me feel more balanced, happy and productive and I can’t imagine ever going back now. I’m enjoying the results so much that now when I have to be to set really early (like 6am/7am) I don’t even mind getting up a little earlier than necessary so I can go through my usual routine!

8-hour-diet-book
It’s been a while since my last Skinny Chick Book Club post but I felt compelled to tell you about my latest read! After flipping through the pages of Women’s Health magazine at the gym, I was completely intrigued with this new 8 hour diet concept (aka intermittent fasting) and just had to buy the full book on amazon ASAP! I’m down about 5-7lbs since I started but let me say I do not have much weight to lose and I could easily see this helping people lose even more weight relatively effortlessly.

In a nutshell, we eat too many hours of the day and therefore not giving our body enough time to burn our energy stores or do some much needed cellular repairs. So by eating for only 8 hours of the day, at least 3-5 times a week, we can help our body return to its optimal health and fat burning potential. The benefits are too many to lost but its safe to say it extends way beyond mere weight loss. Think helping new skin cells regenerate, slowing cancer cell growth and protecting your brain against neurodegenerative disorders!

I simply had to give it a whirl! I will warn you, if your a breakfast lover like myself it is not easy to give that up but after a few days I got used to having my morning cup of tea and waiting till noon to break my fast. I also definitely felt it on the opposite end, after my eight hours were up a few nights I was pretty hungry and very regretful of not eating more for dinner. However, compared to most “diets” it’s relatively painless and effective, you never feel like a food is “off limits”, which is great. Definitely give this book a read! It has tons of scientific evidence to back up its theories and loads of additional nutritional information about different foods that you should be squeezing into your eight hours to get optimal performance out of your body! An overall a Go Sweet and Skinny gold star!

cookiedoughNope, you didn’t misread that. This is actually a recipe for a HEALTHY cookie dough dip!! Gasp, I know, I’m making all of your little girl slumber party dreams come true right now. If the idea of this grosses you out at all, I apologize, some of us like to embrace our inner fat kid and dig into raw cookie dough from time to time when no ones looking, if this is not you, forward on to the next post about kale chips. For the rest of you guilty pleasure seekers, I experimented with this healthy  ‘cookie dough’ recipe I found on “Chocolate Covered Katie” at the Super Bowl this weekend and it seemed to be quite a success. I’ve tinkered with it a bit to give you something that will have a better consistency and taste but feel free to play around and enjoy! To view the original recipe, you can click here http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2011/05/23/want-to-eat-an-entire-bowl-of-cookie-dough/

COOKIE DOUGH DIP

1 can of garbanzo beans
1/4 cup of almond butter
1/8 of tsp of salt
1/8 of tsp of baking soda
2 tsp of vanilla
4 heaping tblsps of oat bran
1/3 cup brown sugar (feel free to use agave/maple syrup but your dip will be slightly stickier)
1 bag of chocolate chips (or vegan chocolate or carob chips)

Combine all of the ingredients excluding the chocolate chips in a food processor till finely mixed. Fold in chocolate chips or vegan chocolate chips (use about half a bag) and pair with some graham crackers or cinnamon sugar pita chips! Voila! You should never ever need to get a stomach ache from eating raw eggs in cookie dough again and your getting some protein while completely indulging! Your welcome, ladies. 😉

kalechips    Kale is definitely the “in” green of the moment here in New York and if you’ve visited some of the city’s green markets or smorgashburgs you know that kale chips are now all the rage. Over the summer I saw people selling boxes of kale chips for as much as 10 and 12 dollars a batch! Well the truth is, they are delicious and much better for you to nosh on then their potato counterpart but they are SOO EASY to make at home that you should never feel the need to spend that much money on them!

Also, did I mention how AMAZING kale is for you?! It’s got 5 grams of fiber per cup and only 36 calories, more calcium than milk (yay! vegans!), tons of Vitamin A to keep your eye sight strong and Vitamin C to keep your immune system in tip top shape this flu season! So pretty much Kale Chips = Super Snack!

With the SuperBowl just around the corner I figured you’d all be jonesing for some healthy options to sneak on to your snack table while your watching the game and I thought these easy to make kale chips would be perfect! You may even be surprised to see some of your friends and family eating them all up on you, tkale2hey’re that good.

KALE CHIPS

1 or 2 bundles of Kale (depending on how many people your trying to feed)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Garlic powder

Adobe seasoning

First, preheat your oven to 350. Then thoroughly wash the kale and let it dry on paper towels to get any excess water out. Take a knife and cut out all the stems leaving only the leafy green part of the kale. Either cut this part apart into little sections or just rip it using your hands into smaller parts and throw into a large mixing bowl. Once all the kale is in your bowl drizzle your olive oil on top, like you would a salad, not over saturating. Sprinkle garlic powder and adobe seasoning to your taste into the kale bowl, your going to want to season it a bit more than you normally might a typical vegetable. Now take two spatulas and toss your kale till the olive oil and seasoning is evenly distributed amongst all the leaves. Place the kale on large baking sheets and leave them in the oven for 5-10 minutes till the edges are brown but not burnt. Let them cool and enjoy!  Kale chips are so delicious and nutritious you’ll find yourself getting addicted to making them…don’t say I didn’t warn you. 🙂
