That’s right, the cupcake lady herself may have a slight case of sugar addiction! Let’s blame it on the riveting article in this month’s marie claire called, “Your Brain on Sugar” for enlightening me to the evils of sugar dependence. The article (which I highly recommend you check out) goes on to tell us that researchers are now asking the government to regulate sugar like they do drugs! According to these researchers, the brain’s activity during sugar intake is similar to that of a drug addicts! That means you could be a ‘sugar-a-holic’! Okay, I totally just made that term up but you get the picture.

Naturally, I started to look at my sugar in take and realized that I just may have fallen victim to the sweet stuff. On a daily basis, I probably drink 2-3 cups of coffee and boy do I looooove my coffee sweet! Right there could be around 8 or 9 teaspoons of sugar depending on the day. Luckily, I bake cupcakes enough that I no longer feel tempted to consume more than a taste of a cupcake for quality control anymore. However, I am definitely guilty of the occasional mid-afternoon chocolate chip cookie pick-me-up or even a slice of red velvet cake after dinner if I’m feeling sluggish. And If I’m stressed or having a bad day, I’m even more likely to reach for a sweet treat. One of the top side effects of sugar is stress eating because dopamine (our reward chemical) spikes and makes us crave more to keep our mood lifted. In fact, this effect can lead to weight gain and sluggish work outs because when your dopamine levels spike and then fall you get tired and want more sustenance to perk you up! This happens in both real AND faux sugar! So beware you diet soda drinkers or splenda junkies, this goes for you too! As if that wasn’t enough, there is even research linking sugar to brain fog and aging of the skin. Yikes!

What’s a girl to do?! Well, this girl is going on a ‘sugar cleanse’, another term I just made up, but I’m sure you get the point.   I’m going to start out small, 2 weeks, but long enough to hopefully start noticing some changes! I’m not going nuts with this though, fruit sugars, yogurts sweetened with fruit or any other naturally occurring sugar is a go. I think it’s more important to start of with getting rid of the excess sugar in your diet, at least to start off with. So last night I had my last sugary meal, a piece of red velvet cake and a sugar ladened coffee, and today, I’ve been drinking my coffee black! I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress and let you know any obstacles or changes I’ve noticed along the way! I love sugar but I love my health more!

I think it might be fun to start posting more video tips to spice things up a bit for you guys, so let me know what you think!

My lovely friend Jen picked this little vegan spot for our lunch date and I just haaaaaad to post about it! One Lucky Duck is a cozy little restaurant/take out spot with a couple of tables on 17th street and Irving Place and it is a must stop if your in the hood and in the mood for a quick, delicious, nutrient packed vegan shake or juice concoction! I got myself a decadent cacao latte made with bananas, cashew milk, cacao and vanilla and it was ah-mazing! They also have real food, everything from salads to ice cream sundaes to satisfy your little vegan tummy! Also, be sure to check out their website oneluckyduck.com to view more about them and even order some vegan, raw goodies online! Yup, that’s right they sell mail order cookies, dangerous. Very dangerous.

Last night I was saving the planet one meal at a time with out even realizing it! I stumbled upon this all vegetarian fast food-like establishment after kicking some butt at an audition around midtown west and decided I would test it out! It’s on 56th and 8th ave, right on the corner and is pretty casual and affordable. My whole meal was under 10 dollars, I got two sour cream black bean tacos, sweet potato chippers and a water. It was quite a good amount food for the price, not to mention yummy. Of course like the veggie-foodie dork I am, I took pictures and looked up their website, when to my surprise I stumbled upon a vision that extends far beyond just eating healthier vegetarian fare. Check out this insert from their vision statement that I found quite inspiring.

Otarian is based on our passion for, and dream of, a sustainable planet, and this vision is paramount to the concept and implementation of the Otarian philosophy. It is the tangible display of our hope in the intelligence of human kind to understand, accept and adapt to a more sustainable way.

One of the main contributors to global environmental degradation is the livestock industry. The effects of large-scale meat production are wide-spread and impact unsustainably on almost all aspects of the environment whilst creating other economic and social costs. Greenhouse gas emissions, inefficient utilisation of resources, deforestation, water pollution, land degradation, unfair trade, ill health and obesity are just some of these costs. The Otarian menu is completely meat-free, a delicious range of vegetarian options that eliminate the negative effects of livestock production whilst providing nourishment. Otarian serves dishes that travel the globe offering to all food that loves life and the planet. – otarian.com ‘our vision’

How cool is that?! A veggie fast food restaurant that is literally saving the planet one meal at a time?! I implore you to seek one of these babies out and have a meal, tell your friends to have a meal, etc. The world needs more people like the founders of Otarian, people who are looking at the bigger picture and providing fast and easy America with healthy options on the go and contributing to not only healthier people but a healthier planet!  Check out their website http://www.otarian.com/love-food/our-restaurants/new-york.html and start eating for your planet!

I don’t usually write terribly blog like personal articles without a recipe or something to review but today I was compelled to share my ‘yogic sanity’ with you. As you may have read, my new late night addiction has been candle light yoga and it has made all the difference! Now not only do I look forward to my evening sessions to unwind and center myself but I’ve also been craving yoga in the AM and doing a more intense yoga flow to start my days!
However, what I really wanted to share with you is the effects it’s had on my mental state. In my usually chaotic overbooked life, I often find myself easily stressed and overwhelmed but lately it feels as if someone has hit the slow motion button on my days. I am calmer, more centered and have a better perspective on life’s little mishaps. I find myself getting more done because I spend less time worrying about it. It’s been a wonderful revelation and I’m excited to keep up with it and see what other long term benefits will come. So that’s my advertisement for daily yoga, have you experienced related effects of daily exercise? Email me at gosweetandskinny@gmail.com, I’d love to hear your story!

I don’t know if you remember a while back when I first posted about my time on the Dukan Diet but I mentioned how wonderful my skin started looking while I was on it. Unfortunately, it went back to it’s usual mess once I started incorporating carbs again. Fast forward to a few weeks ago and I went to the doctor with a horrendous stomach flu and when he heard that I was a certain antibiotic for my skin he nearly blew a gasket! My doctor couldn’t believe that a dermatologist would put a healthy young lady like me on such a drug when it has so many sever intestinal side effects. Of course, he told me to stop it immediately and we would try other topical products to help fight my acne but I couldn’t help but google it and find out all the awful side effects, which I’m embarrassed to have not done in the first place! So what do these two things have to do with each other you might be asking..

Well, I’ve decided to take things in to my own hands (and mouth) and see if I can clear up my face by altering the kinds of foods I consume. Starting tomorrow, I’m going to follow the Dukan Diet religiously to see if it will once again work it’s skin clearing magic on me. Then, perhaps more importantly, when it’s initial “hardcore” phase is over and we start adding foods back in I’m going to be very careful about noticing how my skin reacts to certain foods. It seemed like a daunting task a few months ago but now when I put it in perspective to the damage an antibiotic could be doing to my digestive track, it seems like an obvious choice. So stay tuned! I’ll be posting what kind of crafty all protein meals I’ve cooked up as well as (possibly) post a before and after skin pic if we see some good results! fingers crossed!

Get ready to fall inlove/become addicted to Crunch’s Candlelight Yoga DVD! I stumbled upon this beauty while searching netflix for new work out videos to try and stashed it away in my instant queue till the perfect night arrived for some bed time yoga. Now, maybe I’m a dork but I totally lit candles in my apartment when I was doing this DVD and I finished feeling so relaxed and stretched. I was in that perfectly sleepy happy state where you glide to bed on a cloud. Trust me, if you’ve had a rough day or are just wound up about a problem at work or with a boyfriend, this yoga will bring you back to zen faster than a pint of ben and jerry’s can (and you’ll never feel guilty afterwards).  So it’s safe to say I am now ADDICTED to doing this every night before slipping into bed with a book. Sometimes, we need to give our bodies what they need and in New York City I bet a lot of them are craving a little Candlelight yoga!

Who doesn’t love to do a little spring cleaning?! Well, okay, I’m not terribly jazzed about it either but sometimes you got to put in some work to keep that home beautiful and what better incentive to pamper your sweet abode than all the calories you’ll burn while doing it!

Yesterday, I had my girl over to help me paint my bedroom this kick-ass shade of turquoise and boy did we work up a sweat! Neither of us felt guilty about skipping the gym that morning or indulging in some skinnygirl margaritas and guacamole after we finished. And rightly so on our part! Painting burns about 320 calories an hour and we had just made a whole afternoon/evening of it! So here’s a list of some other surprise workouts around the house, cause come on doesn’t it make it a little more exciting to clean when you get to skip the gym to do it?!

Scrubbing your tub..200 cals in 30 minutes

Making Beds…………..130 cals if you have 30 mins worth of beds to make

Cleaning Windows…125 cals for 30 mins of wax on, wax off

Wash your dishes…..160 cals for 30 mins of skipping the dishwasher

Vacuuming……………..180 cals for an hour of clean carpet

Ironing……………………140 cals an hour but don’t hunch over the board

Climbing Stairs……..285 cals for 30 minutes of putting that laundry away

Now get cleaning my skinny little sweethearts! 🙂

These little treasure troves of healthy lunches are popping up all over Manhattan! I highly suggest popping into one if you happen to spot one, I’ve been to the one on 18th by union square and the one downtown by Wall street but there are plenty more. Dig Inn makes getting delicious veggies fast and easy! My favorite picks are their veggie platter (where you can choose from five of their vegetarian or vegan sides) or their organic tofu platter (which comes with three sides). With sides like local spaghetti squash, balsamic mushrooms and broccoli and quinoa salad your lunch will be so yummy you’ll forget how healthy it is!

And as if this place didn’t already have my name written all over it- THEY MAKE FRESH JUICES! I’ve tried their all greens with apple, lemon and ginger and it is fabulous. With a slogan like “everything here is good for you”, you better make this your new favorite skinny spot this spring. Check them out at http://www.diginn.com/order to see if they deliver to your office! 🙂

Today is my first day since Sunday out of my apartment and I sit here in Starbucks with a large iced green tea and a toasted plain bagel with butter (insert your gasp here, it’s ok). Nope, this isn’t some “cheat day”, sadly white carbs are the only thing I’ve been able to stomach for the past 5 days. Hit by an awful fever and flu like symptoms, I could barely get anything down for the first three days but it became apparent that my antibiotic would just eat my stomach away (or force me to throw it up) if I did not try to get something down there. Enter, the sick girl’s beloved friend “toast”. I have been living on toast for days!! I’ve eaten more simple carbs in the past few days then I have probably eaten in entire months of my sweet and skinny little life. Bleck!

Funny thing is, once upon a time ago, I would have loved such a good excuse to indulge in something so “off limits” in my mind. However, when your body is utterly fighting for it’s health and you feel like death, you actually want something with nutrients in it! I’ve been dreaming about raw broccoli with hummus and fresh fruit. In fact, I’m pretty sure starting tomorrow I’ll be throwing that loaf of bread out and buying some fresh produce because my body is begging for it. I’m not going to say that having whatever awful flu -like-bug I was infected with was a good thing, but it definitely gave me a refreshed outlook on taking care of myself. I can’t wait to feel good enough tomorrow to get back into my work out and to introduce my tummy back to some other food groups!
