Blasts of Light

There’s not much I love more than a nice New York brunch, except maybe a nice NY vegan brunch! I can not believe I’ve lived in New York for almost four years and hadn’t stumbled upon this adorable vegan spot earlier! Located right by Washington Square Park “Sacred Chow” is your typical adorable hole in the wall little vegan joint. I had a lovely little brunch date with my girlfriend there and we both loved our food and giant mimosas, hehe. She got the Sardinian omelet and I indulged in their belgian waffles with coconut whipped cream and fresh fruit! Yummy! We both agreed we’ll definitely have to go back and try out their dinner menu. I’d highly recommend brunch here if your just going vegan and want to treat yourself. It’s a cute place with delicious food in one of my favorite nyc neighborhoods!

Visit their website to view their whole menu!

As all of you Facebook fans know, I am doing Oprah & Deepak Chopra’s 21 day Meditation challenge! If your not in the loop on Facebook, click here and fix that! I have absolutely loved challenging myself to make time for a meditation each day with the over all concept being meditating on perfect health. As per usual on Monday, I had set out with the intention of writing my “Monday Motivation” post after my meditation but as soon as I saw our centering thought for today’s meditation, I knew I had to share it with you! So let’s all take a moment, take a deep breath, wash away all the scattered thoughts of the day and think about ” with awareness, I create healthy habits”. In the pre-meditation discussion, Deepak explains how so many of our unhealthy habits come out of our unconscious actions. We’re so used to reaching for the sugar to put in our morning coffee, taking the elevator instead of the stairs, or even worse, smoking cigarettes or grabbing fast food on the go, that we’re not actually self aware to what we’re doing.  Being self aware is one of the crucial tools to creating balance and health in your body. Be aware of your actions, be aware of what your putting into your body, ask yourself questions before you eat something or skip the gym. ” How is this helping me?” “What is this doing for my body?” So many times all it takes to make the right decision is asking yourself one easy question because in that question you become aware and connected to that moment and are no longer on the conveyor belt of your usual pattern. Let’s take this monday to carve a few minutes out for yourself and just repeat those centering words, “With awareness, I create healthy habits.” Think about what habitual, unconscious things you do that could be affecting your health in a negative way and what things you could consciously create as new, improved, healthy habits. Perfect health, vitality, energy , a fit body and a balanced mind all start here. Get aware!

March has gotten off to a manic start for me, not that I can complain, I am much happier when I have a lot on my plate but that doesn’t always help me from feeling overwhelmed and even anxious at times. I’m sure you can relate! Sometimes you just get into that rut where there are never enough hours in the day, your head is spinning and your to-do list gives you an anxiety attack, hey, we’re human. As a New Yorker, sometimes I feel like this is a much more common state of being than in other parts of the country but that’s a whole other story! Anyways, in times of high stress and anxiety we tend to reach for comfort food. Had a bad day? You deserve a cupcake! This week been really rough at work? Let’s just stay in and order pizza. Now I’m not saying you don’t deserve a cupcake because I love cupcakes! I am saying that when your looking for something to calm your mind and balance your stressed out body, our go-to “comfort foods” do the exact opposite! Shoveling some unrefined cards down your throat is sure to give you a little pep in your step for an hour (if your lucky) but then ultimately leave you more ravenous then before and feeling empty. Same thing goes for that pizza.

So when I’m having an awful day, what do I reach for? GREEN JUICE! I know, you probably want to punch me, right? Well just hear me out. Imagine how you feel when your stressed and anxious, now think about the effect those feelings have on your body, your organs, right down to the cells. I’ll give you a hint, you’re also putting all that stress on to them! What did they ever do to you? When I reach for a green juice or whatever fresh vegetable juice I fancy that day, it reminds me that I love my body! I am so lucky to have this wonderful body that can withstand so much stress, that gets me through each day and that I am still in control of what I put in to it. To me, drinking some fresh green juice feels like a nice warm blanket all over my body. I’m getting lots of nutrients and it’s helping my body return to balance! I don’t crash in an hour and I don’t wake up the next morning next to a pizza box and feel awful about myself. But hey, if you drink your green juice, relax, center yourself and couple hours later (with a more level head) you want a cupcake or a slice of pizza, go for it! Just don’t forget to have your comfort juice!

That’s right, it’s Monday! Monday has quickly become one of my favorite days of the week because I love writing these Monday motivation posts. I hope they get your week off to an inspiring and productive start the way they do to mine. This kick ass quote comes to you from Babe Ruth and I love it because (like many of the quotes I pick) you can apply it to your diet or healthy living choices but you can also apply it to ANY area of your life that you are frustrated with right now!

It IS hard hard to beat someone that won’t give up! In fact, it’s near impossible. SO what’s that area of your life your struggling to win in? Is it diet and fitness? Do you feel that every diet you try and fail is just another reason you’ll never be the size you want? Well trust me I know how discouraging life can be. I’m a professional actress, I got on audition after audition week after week without sometimes booking anything! It stings but you have got to focus on your end goal, whether that be a size 4, a successful marriage or a dream job because at the end of the day that’s what keeps you in the game! And the longer you stay in the game the easier it will be to win! It’s a great idea today while your killing sometime at work to take a post it note and write yourself a little reminder, maybe it’s this quote or maybe it’s just a sentence or two about why achieving your goal is so important to you. I find when trying to eat healthier and make better choices it’s easiest when you constantly remind yourself why it is so important to you. A reason that really resonates with you like “to be a good example for my kids” or “to love what I look like naked”. Whatever gets your blood flowing and engages you on the path toward success. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so cut yourself some slack and know that everyday you keep on striving and pushing for your goals is a victory. “It is very hard to beat someone that never gives up”.

Happy Monday!!

applesnpb                 It comes as a shock to most people when I reveal that I was never a big peanut butter fan. I get this confused and disappointed look on peoples’ faces when I reveal this not-so- secret little factoid. “But why?” “What don’t you like?” “I love peanut butter!” I know, I get it and I’m not trying to insult your favorite nut butter but it just never struck my fancy.  I was just never really into nuts growing up and combine that with all the mixed media messages as to whether or not nuts were healthy or fatty, I just figured it was easier that way. Now as a vegetarian/vegan it’s important to look for other sources of protein to keep you powering through your day so I decided to really try to get into nut butter. My first attempt was almond butter since I enjoy eating almonds a lot more than eating peanuts , I thought this would be a likely winner and I was correct. I quite enjoy almond butter and apples! Victory! However, one faithful day I was at an event and as part of our take home gift bag there was a jar of Peanut Butter and Co’s Cinnamon Raisin Peanut Butter. Well I certainly didn’t want to waste a whole jar of peanut butter so I decided it sounded yummy enough to give it a whirl and boy am I glad I did. I had never thought peanut butter could taste so good! I can practically eat this with a spoon like ice cream – it’s dangerous! The really cool thing about it is that I even compared calories to normal peanut butters and it’s barely anything more. So much deliciousness with out added fat and calories – yippee!

For those of you who don’t live in New York City where Peanut Butter and Co’s headquarters are located or have a supply at your local supermarket, don’t fear! This can be really simple and fun to do at home! I bet if you have kids or babysit kids they would absolutely love revamping their peanut butter too! Simply go to whole foods or your local health good store and get all natural peanut butter, the kind you watch get made as you hold down the lever. Now pick up some of your favorite dried fruit or goodies and mix them in when you get home! Raisins and cinnamon are super easy and guaranteed to rock your world but if your doing this with kids they might have fun adding sprinkles or M&Ms to their mix. Another favorite of mine is chopped dried cherries and mini dark chocolate morsels, for a truly decadent peanut butter! Get creative and let me know what other fun peanut butter revamps you make!

I’ve spent the last five days on a detox plan and I am not proud to say that it was a lot more challenging than I had thought. I typically tend to do juice detox so this was my first official ‘eating clean’ detox. Essentially all I could have was 4 cups of green tea, herbal tea, fruits & veggies, quinoa, black beans, lentils and almonds. Oh and I could have some oats in the morning! Not bad, right? It doesn’t seem hard because you still get to eat and your not just surviving on juices but it still has eliminated all processed foods and sugars (other than natural fruit sugars).

Would I advise you to try this detox diet plan ?
Sure, the detox is nutrient loaded and can help you get creative with fruits and veggies. You’ll end up discovering you have a taste for way more healthy meals than you ever thought. You’ll also ween yourself off sugar and coffee, which is HUGE progress! I’m finished with the detox but I’m still maintaining awareness of not consuming a lot of sugar or processed foods.

Did you lose a lot of weight?
Well, I lost a few pounds but keep in mind I generally eat pretty healthy and didn’t have much to lose. If you continued to consume the detox foods past the 5 days and adapted it as more of a vegan or clean eating lifestyle you would certainly see weight loss and if you normally eat pretty crappy, you are absolutely guaranteed to drop some pounds.

Were you hungry or tired all the time on the detox?
I was a little tired at first because I was extremely coffee dependent but after the first day or so that subsided and I was fine. I did notice myself sleeping “harder” at night, if you know what I mean. I would literally pass out and not budge till my alarm rang in the morning. Hungry I wasn’t but I was craving things ALL THE TIME! The oats and quinoa fill you up but your left feeling kind of empty, itching for something more. I had cravings for anything from salmon to red velvet brownies, which got torturous.

On the whole, the detox diet felt great to do something nice for my body. Detoxing definitely reminded me how important it is to be aware of what we’re putting in our bodies and how good we can feel when we put high quality vitamins and nutrients into us. It’s definitely not easy to eat super healthy and not eat processed foods all the time but with a little extra time and preparing meals and planning out what your going to eat each day you can make your life more conducive to it. Clean eating is ALWAYS the way to go and I would highly recommend doing this detox diet to anyone who wants to refresh their system, gain energy and kick start some healthy eating habits!
